Sandra slammed the door shut to the campervan. Which did not help the pounding in my head.
âKeeping secrets from us now, huh,â she spat at me as she sat in the seat opposite. The crease above her brows and narrowed eyes bore into me as she waited for my response.
âIt wasnât a secret Sandra. I didnât know what it all meant.â
âAnd you didnât think to let us in so that we might help you figure it out,â she shouted.
I groaned and laid my head back on the seat, staring at the felt roof.
âRose...â
âSorry Ev, Iâm with Sandra on this one. You should have told us.â I could feel Roseâs gaze on me with the same intensity as Sandraâs.
âWe are supposed to trust each other. Support each other and all that. Clearly you donât feel that way.â Sandra huffed. âYou canât even look at us, you know youâre in the wrong!â
My head snapped up, and I looked directly at her.
âSandra just stop. My headâs pounding, everything is happening too fast and I donât know what to think or who to trust! I am sorry I didnât tell you, but tonight was the first time I got any clear communication! And I still donât know who he is or what it means. So please, I understand why youâre feeling the way you are, but keep your bitching to yourself.â
Sandra stared at me with her mouth open. Snapping it shut, she threw me a filthy look and turned to face the window.
âYou could always have trusted us,â she whispered.
Guilt coursed through me. She was right. Maybe I should have confided in them. But with so much happening on the tour, we werenât the closest that we had ever been. The feeling of being overwhelmed was taking over me and a hint of panic was rising. Avetta had been serious when she said the academy is going to be attacked. She had ushered us all into the vans before any of us could ask questions. Callista had bid us farewell and gave me an extra-long hug. Rose whispering pulled me from my thoughts.
âYou put Pearce through a month of hell for betraying your trust, Evvy. Youâve done the same to us,â she turned to look at me. Sorrow filled her eyes.
âItâs not the same Rose, I didnât choose this.â I sighed back.
âThatâs all you keep saying Ev, but you are choosing to keep things from us.â The disappointment in her voice hurt more than Sandraâs shouting. Rose always tried to diffuse situations rather than add to them. I guess this time, I had pushed them too far.
âIâm sorry,â I whispered back and curled into a ball on my seat. Pulling a blanket over myself, I closed my eyes as my tears silently fell.
***
Three days we had been on the road heading back for the academy. Three days the girls had barely spoken a word to me. We had just been told we would stop for the night as we still had another two dayâs journey.
